What the hell do I buy?
Anything you want that you think people will like. It can be funny, useful, silly etc. LA has a lot of funny interesting stuff on Facebook Marketplace.
How big can the gift be?
Keep it reasonable so we can fit a lot of gifts on the stage.
Can we steal gifts?
We think it'll get messy, but you can trade with other people after you pick.
I can't really afford this.
There's free stuff on Facebook Marketplace too.
What if I want to trade?
After you get your gift, you can trade with anyone who wants to. Just be nice and don't harass them.
What if I don't bring a White Elephant gift and still want to participate?
We're going to curate a few items and you'll be able to buy a ticket for $20.
What kind of stuff should I get?
Something funny. Something silly. Something useful. Something not useful. Something nostalgic. Something ridiculous. Something small-medium sized. One of the above. All of the above. Be brave. Swing for the fences. Take risks.
Will there be merch?
Yes. We'll have hats for sale for $25.
What the fuck is a white elephant?
You bring a gift for the other guests of the party. They also bring a gift. Everyone gets a number. When your number is picked at random, you go up and select your gift. You trade. You flirt. You fall in love.
Why the fuck is a white elephant?
Because it's fun to curate things for people you don't know. It pushes you out of your comfort zone. It's fun!!
What if someone doesn't "get" my gift?
Sometimes we have to take risks. Sometimes the other person doesn't get it. That's the unfortunately reality of us not having shared consciousness. But there will be enough people there that someone will be jealous that they didn't pick the thing you got. Even if they don't speak up, just trust in your risk-taking.
What if I forget to wrap it?
Sneak it in without anyone seeing what it is and we'll have paper bags you can put it in (if it fits).
Do I need to prove that I got it from Marketplace?
No. We'll use the honor system and if you lie about it then may your "is this still available?"s forever go unanswered.
Can I explain what the gift is?
Yeah. If you want to give some context and write what it is on a paper, you can do that.
Are people going to know who the gift comes from?
Not unless you want to say! Write your name on a piece of paper if you want to.
What if I don't have a gift and want to participate?
We've curated a limited number of gifts for people who want to buy in. You'll buy a ticket and then get to pick like everyone else.
